44 needy Delray Beach children will holiday shop with local cops

delray-policeDELRAY BEACH — Forty-four needy children in Delray Beach will have $100 to spend on gifts for themselves and their families when Delray Beach Police officers take them shopping this weekend.

“Heroes & Helpers” is an annual event that pairs children from underprivileged families with police officers who take them holiday shopping. Officers will escort the children to Target, on Linton Boulevard near Interstate 95, on Sunday, Dec. 11 for the event.

“Heroes & Helpers will help make the holidays brighter for so many local children thanks to the generous people at Delray Lacrosse, Target, Kids-N-Cops and Delray Citizens for Delray Police” which donated the money that will be used during the event, Police Chief Jeff Goldman said in a statement.

The children, who are selected from lower-income schools, will also create holiday crafts with officers, take photographs with Santa Claus and leave with snacks and foods to take home, said Detective Adrian Rackauskas, coordinator of the event.

“Many of these children don’t know when their next meal will come,” Rackauskas said.

Each child will get a holiday turkey dinner to take home.
