It started in Hawthorne, California in 2011, became a national campaign, and now it’s coming to Boynton Beach.
On Saturday, the public is invited to Coffee With a Cop at the McDonald’s at 1810 S. Federal Highway. The event is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is meant to build community relationships between officers and the city’s residents.
The event is in an informal setting, and gives the public a chance to ask the officers questions.
The owners of this fast-food location has held the event at other locations, and wanted to bring it to Boynton.
“Of course we welcomed the opportunity,” said Stephanie Slater, Boynton police department’s spokeswoman. She said it will be a chance for the officers to have conversations with the residents and listen to their feedback and concerns.
The event includes a bounce house, an appearance by the department’s therapy dog Harley and K9 Bako, and officers who patrol the area will be in attendance. Children will be offered free ice cream or apple slices, and adults will be offered a free small coffee.
Slater said the department plans to hold more of these in the future.
“We anticipate it being very successful,” she said.
