Glades Road could see entry and exit point as 95 Express project moves forward

The state could move the southernmost 95 Express entry and exit point in Palm Beach County.

The express lanes along Interstate 95, which already operate in Miami-Dade and southern Broward counties, eventually will reach north into Palm Beach County, with work on the final link – into Delray Beach – going out for bids in 2019.

The paid lanes have dedicated entry and exit points where tolls are collected. The lanes bypass many interchanges along the highway, as they are intended for use by longer-range travelers.

Where previous plans for the first express lanes segment that will stretch into southern Palm Beach County — for which bidding is slated to start in 2017 — has the southernmost entry and exit point near Palmetto Park Road, the Florida Department of Transportation now plans to move it closer to Glades Road to serve that area, FDOT consultant and project engineer Will Suero said in a presentation at the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization Board meeting Thursday morning.

The decision, he noted, was in response to comments from the MPO Board and public.

FDOT decided to “look again at the numbers and make sure we maximize the ability of the express lanes to serve long-range trips,” he said.

The entry and exit point at Glades Road also would serve drivers traveling north to the Yamato Road and Spanish River Boulevard exits, Suero added.

Robert Weinroth, Boca Raton city councilman and MPO Board member, called the move “much better.”

FDOT is holding a public information workshop to discuss Phase 3B of the 95 Express project — which goes from south of Southwest 10th Street to Linton Boulevard — from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 100 Fairfield Drive, Deerfield Beach. There will be a presentation on the project at 6:30 p.m. Residents will be able to review drawings and other information about the 95 Express project.
