DELRAY BEACH — Police officers did push ups in unison, firefighters did them in the rain and lifeguards did them on the sands of Delray’s beaches.

Dozens of the city’s first responders participated in the social media campaign the “22 Pushup Challenge” to raise awareness, and in this case funds, for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder using a video published on Delray Beach Fire-Rescue’s Facebook page.

“Did you know that an average of 22 veterans of the United States military commit suicide everyday as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder?” said fire Chief Neil De Jesus in the video’s opening. In the video, De Jesus challenges his employees to each donate $22 to West Palm Beach Waterfront Warriors, a nonprofit that aids wounded veterans.

In the video, dozens from Delray Beach Police, Fire-Rescue and Ocean Rescue did the 22 pushups while De Jesus and police Chief Jeff Goldman narrate the “heartbreaking problem,” as Goldman described it.

The department’s challenged Boca Raton Police, Boca Raton Fire Rescue, Boynton Beach Police and Boynton Beach Fire Rescue to also participate in the challenge.
