Things to do: Ukulele, cooking, philosophy? Free events at Delray library

DELRAY BEACH — Love ukulele, philosophical discussion or cooking and eating? Those hobbies and many others are the focus of a series of free events at the Delray Beach Public Library this month.

The downtown library, at 100 West Atlantic Avenue, is offering several free book clubs and classes, ending the month with a Halloween-themed extravaganza, according to library officials.

The Halloween event, which they’re calling “BOOooOOktober,” will include trick-or-treating, crafts, costumes and a movie screening of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”

Here’s a list of all the other free events planned during October:

  • Saturday, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29 |10am| “The Writer’s Studio” writing workshop
  • Monday and Thursday, Oct. 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, 20, 24, 27, & 31 |1pm – 4:30pm| “Empowerment Zone” resume-building, and job and computer assistance
  • Monday, Oct. 3 |2pm| “Reducing Stress and Inflammation the Natural Way” presented by Li Zheng, a Palm Beach County acupuncturist
  • Tuesday, Oct. 4 |6pm| “Stress Less, Achieve More” presented by Aimee Bernstein, author of a book by the same name
  • Tuesday, Oct. 4 |6pm| Evening book group on “The Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline
  • Wednesday, Oct. 5, 12, 19, & 26 |11:30am| “Socrates Café,” a philosophy discussion group
  • Wednesday, Oct. 5 & 19 |5:30pm| Boynton Delray Uke Society, a gathering of ukulele lovers
  • Friday, Oct. 7 |3pm| “First Friday, First Stop” screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film “Rebecca”
  • Monday, Oct. 10 |3pm| Monday matinee screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film “The Birds”
  • Thursday, Oct. 13 |12pm| “What’s Cookin’?” Cookbook Club, a monthly cookbook, food lit and potluck club, “The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook” edited by Katie White
  • Thursday, Oct. 13 & 27 |10:30am| “Knit ‘N’ Purl,” a discussion of knitting/crocheting stories and resources
  • Friday, Oct. 14 & 28 |2pm| “Adult Coloring Club”
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18 |6pm| Gold Coast Paranormal Society, a West Palm Beach-based group of ghost hunters, will share their stories of the paranormal and demonstrate the special equipment they use.
  • Thursday, Oct. 20 |2pm| “The Painting and the Piano” book presented by authors Adrianne Lugo and John Lipscomb
  • Monday, Oct. 24 |1pm| Afternoon Book Group – “An Unnecessary Woman” by Rabih Alameddine
