DELRAY BEACH — The city’s fire rescue department is one of many throughout the nation housing a “hero firefighter” riding his bicycle from New Hampshire to Key West for charity, according to Delray Beach Fire-Rescue.

Jerry Lachance, a 68-year-old New Hampshire firefighter, is raising money and awareness for Ride 2 Recovery, a California-based veterans nonprofit. Lachance, who left New Hampshire on Sept. 2, will arrive in Delray Beach — one of his last stops before heading to his Key West destination — late Tuesday, Sept. 27.

He will spend the night at one of Delray’s fire stations before continuing his journey.

Lachance heads to Delray Beach from St. Lucie County, where he will spend Monday night, according to Delray Beach Fire-Rescue.

Lachance was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and served a year in combat in Vietnam, according to Ride 2 Recovery. He’s in his 22nd year as a volunteer firefighter in New Hampshire.
