BOCA RATON — Dunkaroos, pizza rolls, pop tarts.
Alejandra Miranda worried she’d have to give up all her favorite childhood foods when she switched to a vegan diet four years ago. Instead, she spent countless hours in her kitchen perfecting dairy-free versions of the baked good. Her friends and family enjoyed the treats so much, they encouraged her to open a bakery.
A little more than a year after Parlour Bakery set up shop in Plantation, its popularity prompted Miranda, the owner, to expand and open up a second location in Boca Raton, across the street from Royal Palm Plaza at 415 S. Federal Hwy. The grand opening is planned for Saturday, Sept. 17.
“Opening the Boca location just happened so organically,” Miranda said. “There isn’t really a vegan bakery in the area. We heard this from all of our customers and did a little research.”
Parlour is well-known in Broward County for its handcrafted cupcakes, donuts and savory offerings like the pizza rolls and cuban sandwiches. Each menu item is inspired by one of Miranda’s childhood memories, she said.
“If you point out a menu item, I can tell you about a moment I remember eating it,” she said.
Miranda delights in the fact that people compare the dairy-free samplings to “the real thing,” giving vegans the chance to re-connect to the same childhood memories.
“I know exactly how everyone feels,” she said. “I was missing out on these things I really enjoyed.”
For Saturday’s grand opening event, which begins at 10 a.m., the bakery will offer $1 mini donuts and $1 mini cupcakes. Plus, the first 50 customers will get a Parlour canvas “swag bag” and a limited-edition Parlour mason jar filled with a beverage along with a pint of vegan chocolate chip cookie dough.
There will also be chances to win gift cards and other goods, Miranda said.
Come early, Miranda warns, “the Dunakroos cupcakes are always the first to go.”
