DELRAY BEACH — A Delray Beach native who traveled the world dancing for the past 14 years is returning to town to share her knowledge with local kids and teens.

Shanna Woods, 31, graduated from Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach and traveled with several dance troupes and companies based in Chicago, Denver and New Zealand. Now, she’s putting together a youth program at Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach.

According to museum coordinators, Woods will run a dance project that will focus on elements of West African and hip-hop dance. She’ll connect dance physical health, wellness, nutrition and hygiene. Spady focuses on preserving African, Haitian- and Caribbean-American cultural heritage.

The dance program begin Sept. 17 and lasts through May. Registration costs $50.

Woods’ great-grandparents were some of the first to settle in Delray’s African-American community, she said. Returning to Delray Beach is her way of giving back and reconnecting with that community.

“Art (as a whole) is a direct reflection of what’s going on around us,” Woods said in an email. “For a long time, I didn’t know how to verbally express my frustrations with others. Yet when I was dancing, everyone knew exactly how I felt. I want to share that.”
