FAU grad and Fox Sports sideline reporter fired after insensitive comments

Emily Austen, a Florida Atlantic University grad and sideline reporter for Fox Sports Florida and Fox Sports Sun, will no longer appear on Fox Sports after racially charged comments she made during a live broadcast — including comments about “Jews in Boca,” according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Austen, 27, made the comments during a 35-minute Facebook Live broadcast for sports website Barstool Sports. Among the controversial statements she made were comments that she “didn’t even know that Mexicans were that smart,” and how the “Chinese guy is always the smartest guy in math class,” according to the Times, citing the video which has since been taken down.

Austen also said she “used to talk to Jews in Boca” when she was a server and called one customer “stingy” because he complained about how she poured his beer.

Austen, a contract employee paid by event for Fox Sports, was a sideline reporter at Tampa Bay Rays and Orlando Magic games. She hosted programs such as Inside the Rays.

In a statement, Steve Tello, the General Manager and Senior Vice-President of Fox Sports Florida, said Austen was told her comments were unacceptable and she is no longer scheduled to appear in any upcoming programming, according to the Times.
